2009-03-25 - Dev-Scene Forum was hacked
Dev-Scene Forum was Hacked!

Dev-Scene Forum was Hacked!

While Dev-Scene hasn't been directly updated in 6+ months, user security has always been of major importance to me and as such I've continued to apply updates and security patches to services over this inactive period of time.

PHPBB2 has recently been abandoned by the PHPBB group and it seems while I'm still running the most recent release. Exploits are readily available for this forum. Naturally, the first solution would be to upgrade to PHPBB3.. but due to the fact this forum is also dead. I've decided to simply neuter it.

I became aware of the hack recently and in response, I've shut the forum down. Removed posting privileges and NUKED the existing passwords and contact details from the MYSQL database.

This forum will remain for history. The blog service is currently being discussed but is mostly likely going to be removed due to common security concerns.

Now, I think the hacking was used to turn the Dev-Scene forum into a spamming gateway with a large amount of traffic being send to/from the forum at all times.

I think it was an SQL injection because I found 180MB of spam on my forums MySQL

but this doesn't mean they didn't have access to usernames/passwords and contact details. The good news is - PHPBB2 has recently had hashs and salts applied to the passwords but this could be broken if they had the right information.

PLEASE CHANGE PASSWORDS SHARED ON THIS SERVER!

  • Locked down forum privileges to read open. No registration/No login.
  • Removed password and contact details
  • Changed all passwords on shell and MYSQL
  • Removed creation, modification, drop access to the MYSQL database. (Extra Security)

2007-06-11 - CPS3 Decrypted
CPS3 Decrypted

The mighty citadel CPS-3 (Capcom Play System 3) has finally been reverse-engineered after near 11 years of holding strong against any advancement in emulation. It seems that Andreas Naive is a very highly skilled at decryption and has been able to extract the encryption methods and keys for the BIOS and game roms.

Being designed to automatically self-destruct when any small amount of modification or tampering was detected, Deleting all the data and decryption keys from the system - This made the unit a very expensive paperweight, both unplayable and unrecoverable. This caused the CPS3 to become one of the holy grails of emulation.

While the BIOS, game data and decryption keys have been a Tough Nut to Crack. The drivers for the other pieces of hardware have been mastered for years. This has allowed developers to very quickly jump into active emulation development.

This means thanks to the work of Andreas Naive and the MAME development teams, the dream of playing Street Fighter III on my new MAME cabinet could finally be a reality. While there is still a lot of work to be done before we see emulation of the CPS-III games in MAME, this is still a pretty epic moment in emulation history.

2007-05-30 - XBMC recruiting for Linux port
XBMC recruiting developers for Linux port

The Team XBMC wants Linux developers to help them with the porting of the award winning XBMC to the Linux platform

Help wanted: As you may or may not have heard, a few developers on Team-XBMC have begun the porting of XBMC to Linux and OpenGL using the SDL toolkit. The goal is for this to become a full port of XBMC containing all the features and functions available in the Xbox version of XBMC. This is a huge task which is why we are making this public request, seeking C/C++ programmers to volunteer in assisting us with this Linux porting development project. Whether you have contributed to The XBMC Project in the past or not, please consider doing so now.

The XBMC code structure uses a fairly modular design (with libraries and DLLs), and we think that there are enough modules/libraries to keep a wide skill-level range of developers busy in the porting of them all. So please, take a look at the source code, then with the help of our Linux port To-Do list assess where the porting stage is today and see if there's any areas you'd be willing to help out. Note that we are not abandoning the Xbox hardware - XBMC will be a cross-platform software application, supporting both the Xbox and normal computers, (the 'old' Xbox still have a good amount of years to live we hope).

Developers who would like to volunteer should read the Linux porting development project article in the official XBMC WIKI for more detailed information.

2007-05-21 - Save Internet Radio
Save Internet Radio

SaveNetRadio - artists, listeners, and Webcasters working together to save Internet radio as we know it.

"The future of Internet radio is in immediate danger. Royalty rates for webcasters have been drastically increased by a recent ruling and are due to go into effect on July 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!). If the increased rates remain unchanged, the majority of webcasters will go bankrupt and silent on this date. Internet radio needs your help! The Internet Radio Equality Act has recently been introduced in both the House (H.R. 2060) and Senate (S. 1353) to save the Internet radio industry. Please call your senators and your representative to ask them to co-sponsor the Internet Radio Equality Act"

Internet radio as we know it will not survive under the new royalties. We need your help. Please take a moment to call your members of Congress to let your representatives know how much Internet radio means to you. Together, we can force Congress to create a structural solution for this problem and create an environment where Internet radio, and the millions of artists it features, can continue to grow for generations to come.

  • No.2: US$200 cash , and can choose anyone item from the final NEO product prize list.
  • No.3: US$100 cash , and can choose anyone item from the final NEO product prize list.
  • No.4 till No.10: can choose anyone item from the final NEO product prize list.

The rules of NEO Summer coding contest 2007:

  1. All origial entries will get +5 "original score " , but the second entry (same project from last compo but improved, and just enter one more time again ) will don't get any "original score" in this compo.
  2. The public poll will get less judge power , like just get half score than before.
  3. All last neo compo top 10 winners and neo compo partner site can give out their judgements (PM to Dr,neo), we will count them together, so it'll be more professional and more fair.
  4. The No.1 winner can't use their same project (even it's updata a lot) to enter the next compo.
  5. You can enter the GAME contest and APP contest both.
  6. You must put the splash screen of "NEO Summer coding contest 2007" to your production.

For the NDS App, the main concept is for MK6 motion cart and NEO2/3 applications,it's mean you will have more chance to win with an homebrew using the full hardware function.

2007-05-18 - Microsoft banning modified 360s
Microsoft banning Modified 360s from LIVE

Microsoft have drawn first blood banning Xbox360 with modified DVD-ROM drive firmware (both Hitachi-LG and Toshiba-Samsung drives).

On the same day as the Halo3 beta, Microsoft started banning consoles using modified firmware in their DVD-ROM drives. The author of the modified firmware was informed that Microsoft was able to detect these modifications and released an updated release with "disc-jitter" to hopefully bypass possible detection methods. Obviously it looks like Microsoft found another way to detect its use..

Microsoft has decided to ban the consoles unique serial with no possible chance of getting the Xbox LIVE ban removed (Microsoft will not allow anyone to login to LIVE on a modified/banned console).

"One of the great things about LIVE and the unified community is that we work hard to create a level playing field for all gamers and have a no tolerance policy towards inappropriate behavior like hacking or cheating. As part of our commitment to our members, we do not allow people that we have detected to have modified their console to connect to LIVE. This is an important part of our efforts to try and maintain a fair gaming environment for the large majority of gamers that play by the rules. This topic is more important than ever given the recent release of the Halo 3 beta. As a result, some consumers that try to login to LIVE who we detect have illegally modified their console will get an error code (Status Code: Z: 8015 - 190D) when trying to connect to the service. These users will not have their account automatically banned from LIVE, but they will no longer be able to access the service from the console they modified.

We have stated in the past that customers can only enjoy access to the Xbox LIVE community through the use of a genuine, unmodified, Xbox console and we will continue to enforce this rule to ensure the integrity of our service, the protection of our partners and the benefits of our users." - Microsoft Games Global Marketing team
